Dear Parents, Students and Friends

It is with great sadness that we inform you that today, Friday, August 29, 2014, our local authorities reported the death of a former Glenwood student who had just started at Davidson Middle School.  Authorities report that circumstances are still under investigation.  In the interest of confidentiality and respect for the family, we will not speculate as to what happened, and are not referring to the student by name.

First and foremost, the Glenwood School community wishes to convey our heartfelt condolences to the student’s family and friends.  The loss of a child deeply affects all of us.

With this tragedy, we anticipate that some students or families may experience feelings of confusion, frustration and sorrow.  We believe that it is important that students be encouraged to discuss these potential feelings and emotions with a mental health professional.

On Tuesday, September 2nd, San Rafael City Schools’ counselors and psychologists, in addition to crisis counselors and mental health professionals from the Bay Area Community Resources (BACR) group will be on campus during the school day to assist any students in processing the many emotions that may surface when contemplating this tragedy.

We have also arranged for counselors and other mental health professionals to be available to meet with parents on Tuesday morning between 8:30am – 9:30am in the Glenwood School Library.

In addition, on Thursday evening, September 4th, 2014, the District will be hosting a Parent Forum to provide information specific to supporting students through this emotional time.  This event is for parents and other adult family members.  It will be held in the Davidson Middle School library at 6:30pm. Translation will be provided.

We are of the belief that we should not underestimate the potential short term and long term effects of this tragedy on your son or daughter.  We encourage you to speak with your sons and daughters regarding their feelings in this matter.  There is a link right below to resources and guidelines for coping with loss.

This student, like all of us, is a member of the San Rafael community.  Please keep the family and friends in your thoughts and prayers.  Please call if we can be of assistance (415.485.2430).
