Dear Glenwood Families,

On behalf of the staff at Glenwood School, I am happy to welcome you to the 2015-2016 school year! We are looking forward to a productive partnership with you to ensure our children can achieve their highest potential.

For our new families, I would like to take this opportunity to tell you a little about myself. I was born in San Francisco and had a bicoastal upbringing in San Rafael and the suburbs of Washington D.C. I am married and have three children, a boy and two girls. The eldest will be a third grader here at Glenwood.

I am a lifelong learner. I attended the University of Maryland and received a B.S. in Early Childhood Education. After graduating, I returned to San Rafael where I earned my first Master’s Degree in Education with an emphasis in literacy from Dominican University. I continued my studies and completed my Master’s Degree in School Administration. Deciding to go into administration is based upon my desire to make a positive impact on the entire school community.

My educational career began at Glenwood fourteen years ago. During that time, I have been the Teacher in Charge, served on the Site Leadership Team and the Instructional Leadership Team, and created our master schedule. I have also been the San Rafael Teacher Association’s Negotiations Chair and participated in numerous district committees. My experience provides me with a vast knowledge and understanding of the staff, the parent community, and the San Rafael City School District.

The elementary years are critical times of development for students and families and I am excited to work with all of you to make this school year successful. I am an educator committed to students, families, and the love of learning. I look forward to seeing many new and familiar faces on our first day of school. You will find that my door is always open and I am here to support you in any possible way.

Warmly,

Ms. Kimberly Goodhope

Glenwood Elementary Principal

Important Reminders & Procedures

The First Day

The first day of school is Thursday, August 20. Classrooms will open at 8:30. Parents are welcomed and encouraged to walk their child to his/her class on the first day of school. We will not be having a Morning Gathering on the first day of school. This will give the students the opportunity to see their classroom, meet their teacher (s), and become familiar with their new surroundings. Please pack a snack and a lunch for your child. If your child has any allergies, please inform the front office and the classroom teacher.

Morning Gatherings

Our first Morning Gathering will be on Friday, August 21. Morning Gatherings will be on the first day of the school week and on Fridays. They take place on the primary blacktop near the play structure. They will run from 8:45-9:00 AM. This format builds community and the skills of attention, listening, expression, and cooperative interaction. Please join us whenever you can!

Birthday Celebrations

On the first Friday of each month we will celebrate your child’s birthday. August birthdays will be celebrated on August, 21st. Please join us for each celebration.

School Hours

Kindergarten: 8:45 AM - 1:45 PM

1st- 5th grades: 8:45 AM – 3:15 PM (Wednesday’s dismissal is 1:45 PM)

On site aftercare is provided by the City of San Rafael and is open until 6:30 PM (415-485-3102)

Class Placements

Classes are still being finalized. Placements will be emailed to families and posted on the office window at 4:00 on Tuesday, August 18.

Our configurations have changed slightly. We currently have:

4 Kindergartens (Gray, Ehrlich, Rogers, and Jones)

3 1st grades (Ojeda/Williams, Reed, and Mont-Eton)

1/2 Combination Class (Davies)

3 2nd grades (Breznak, Treewater, and Good)

3 3rd grades (Hood, Conte, and Corsini)

3 4th grades (Pellegrini, Leshnick, and Bordley/Osorio)

2 5th grades (Murphy and Tyrell-Smith)

Our Instructional Schedule

Another shift for us last year was our master schedule. We built the schedule with input from teachers, consultants, and the GSF leadership. We are able to sustain this schedule with all of the “encore” blocks (art, computers, PE, science, library, music) in place while still maintaining our focus and priority on differentiated learning. We now have a team of resource specialists and aides that will work with each grade level to create small group instruction focused on intervention, extension, challenge, and English Language Development.

Communication

We are in the process of changing our Student Information System (SIS) back to Aeries. In the meantime, I’d like to invite you to continue to visit our current school website. This will serve as a resource tool for all upcoming events, student/parent handbook, and important reminders. Email is still the best way to reach the front office. Please email Ms. A at acashman@srcs.org. Our priority is to eliminate classroom interruptions. Please try to tell your child about their after-school arrangements before you drop them off in the morning.

Attendance

If your child arrives after the last bell at 8:45 AM, he/she must sign-in at the office. They will be given a tardy slip to give to their teacher. If your child is absent, call or email Ms. A with a reason for the absence. You can reach her at 415-485-2430 or acashman@srcs.org. Please keep them home if they are sick. They need to be without a fever for 24 hours to come back to school.

Supplies

You do not need to worry about providing your child with any school supplies besides a backpack and lunch box.  The GSF makes sure that all your child’s needs are met by generously supplementing the District’s allowance.

Campus Beautification

We give many thanks to our site custodians, Gary and Trang, and the District’s entire maintenance crew who have been working diligently to prepare our campus for the start of the new school year. I will be working with the GSF, the Dad’s Club, and other interested parties to continue to beautify/update the campus. Please let Ms. A know if you notice anything that needs tender loving care or fixing.

Spirit

This school year we will encourage our entire Glenwood community to demonstrate our EAGLE PRIDE by wearing our school colors on Fridays and participating in our Student Council Spirit Days! Spirit items will be on sale on the first day of school.

Safety Policy & Procedures

As you are aware, student safety continues to be a high priority at Glenwood School. The Student Safety and Wellness Group will be training and finalizing procedures to address the needs of all Glenwood Eagles. Please refer to the plan, as well as, the safe food list for all food activities.

PBIS

We are in the final implementation stage of PBIS. The main focus of Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is to provide a clear system for all expected behaviors at Glenwood Elementary School. Through PBIS, we will work together to create and maintain a productive, safe environment in which ALL school community members clearly understand the shared expectations for behavior. We believe that through the implementation of PBIS systems and strategies we will increase student academic performance, increase safety, decrease problem behavior, and continue to maintain a positive school climate.

iTeams

The San Rafael City Elementary School District was recently awarded a California Math and Science Partnership Cohort 10 grant to support integrated Technology Engineering and Math Science (iTEAMS).  iTEAMS is a professional development research project designed to provide teachers with support to deepen their content knowledge and pedagogy to promote Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education aligned to the Common Core State Standards in Mathematics (CCSS) and Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).  Professional development for the grant activities will be provided by the Math Department of San Francisco State University and the Exploratorium. Five of our teachers are participating in the three-year grant.
